Course description:
Young people are challenging roles and identities like never before, opening up new possibilities to discuss gender and feminism in the classroom. This class will examine these new possibilities and their challenges, looking at teaching experiences and exploring new practices in the context of the history of concepts, theories and debates in feminism and LGBTQ+ movements from the late twentieth century to the present.
The course will take an intersectional and transnational approach to feminism, a movement that defines gendered power structures as indivisible from class, race and ability. It will also take an activist approach to feminist and gender theory, studying key academic writings in relation to historical and contemporary liberation movements, asking how the readings and case studies relate to the lived and material realities of the students on the course.
